there were many different language-related activities going on across the school, from nursery to year 6: mrs clarke read “the three little pigs” in polish to the topaz classes, miss gonzalez and mrs levine read “the very hungry caterpillar” in spanish to the sapphire classes. the emeralds had an interactive french storytelling session led by the freshwater theatre company and the aquamarine phase enjoyed a visit to our languages café where they were able to practise their french, german and spanish and try some typical foods. the children across the school learnt words in greek, bulgarian, polish, french, spanish, german, italian, nigerian, hindi - and more! we had an “around the world” themed menu for school lunch and children took part in lots of activities such as art appreciation of monet paintings, studying flags from different countries and creating their own flag design, painting french monuments using pointillism, learning songs in another language to name just a few. it was brilliant to see the children so engaged in learning other languages and finding out about different cultures. well done everyone! not only were the children able to celebrate their unique qualities by designing and creating their own t-shirts but they got to do it with their buddy class! a big thank you must go to fog who paid for everyone's t-shirts once again! we were lucky enough to have a number of visitors over the week including shaun dellenty and robyn steward who came to talk about their lives and inspire children to be resilient even when things are tough. in addition to the assembly, robyn met with our year 2 children to talk about the challenges of living with eight disabilities and how she sees the world from an autistic perspective. to finish off her visit, robyn once again captivated the ks1 and ks2 children by performing a jazz concert in each playground! jason, our amazing sport coach organised some inclusive sports, including seated volleyball for some of the year groups. the children loved the challenge but they also developed an appreciation for others and how less abled bodied people may find everyday tasks difficult. bigfoot theatre came in to work with year 3 and 4 on british values through drama, using freeze frames to show respect, individual liberty and what they mean to our children. nursery and reception made their t-shirts with their buddies and read books about differences such as same, same but different and elmer. nursery also made their own version of the differences advert and spoke about what made them different. the video was so incredible and the children spoke with such confidence, miss evans couldn't resist playing it in the whole school assembly the following week! to celebrate such a successful differences and buddy week, one of our governors, neville hayles, came to award the winners of the t-shirt competition with mrs. wright! the t-shirts were amazing and it was very difficult to choose the finalists. every year, we end our assembly in the ks2 playground with a grand wake 'n' shake performance, prepared by a number of our year 6 children. it was fantastic. everyone's energy was high and as you can see from the photos the children loved every minute of it. we're looking forward to differences and buddy week 2019 already!
